“Which I don’t want to be that guy that’s like ‘Oh, man, my song is so good,’ you know, ’cause I’m totally not that guy!” Combs shared with ABC News Radio, “I was in tears singing the work tape of that song when we wrote it… and I’m totally NOT the guy that’s… so emotional…” Luke added “It was one of the few times where I’ve really been moved by my own song,” he explains. The writing process took hours and was an emotional process. Combs had the idea in his phone and Durrette had a son heading off to college, so he wanted to give him a reminder that he would always be there for him. The father continually offers encouragement in the chorus as he explains that “even though I’m leaving, I ain’t going nowhere.”Ĭombs wrote the track with frequent collaborator and friend, Ray Fulcher, and renowned songwriter Wyatt Durrette. The last verse tells of the boy speaking with his father in the final stages of the father’s life as he explains how he doesn’t believe he can go on without his father. The boy also fears being unable to contact his father. The second describes the boy speaking with his father before heading into combat and the fear that comes along with it. The first describes a young boy who is afraid of monsters, therefore doesn’t want his father to leave. Through each of the verses, the song describes a stage in life between a boy and his father. After being released as a radio single, the song of course reached number one and achieved massive success. Three years after debuting it, Combs released the track on his five song EP, The Prequel, and then again on his November 2019 album, What You See Is What You Get. I would continually listen to the low-quality, live performance of the song because it’s just that good. When I first saw a performance of Combs performing this song in 2016 at Nashville’s renowned Bluebird Café, I instantly wanted it to be released ASAP. These songs help to put into perspective our fathers’ toughness, as well as their gentle and caring nature. Over the years, many of Country music’s biggest stars have also doubled as full-time dads and have sought to convey their fatherhood through their music. As stern and unbreakable as our dads may seem, they will always have an affectionate, soft spot for their children, regardless of whether or not they show it. Dads hand down generations of knowledge to their children and teach them more than they will ever know, often times unknowingly doing so.
From the beginning, children will often seek to be like their fathers and even mimic their every action. Without a doubt, fathers serve as one of the most influential and respected individuals in nearly every child’s life.
